Stumble Into Indonesia's Unseen Places

My fondness of Hummingbird Eatery started when I spent a night at Hummingbird guesthouse in Bandung in 2012. There I went to dine just in front of the establishment, and I was happy to know that they were soon opening a branch in Jakarta! Yay! Immediately it’s on the list of my favorite cafes in Jakarta, following this one and that one.
Though as not as adorable as the one in Bandung, Hummingbird Eatery in Jakarta is also attractive with the gigantic wooden cages and hummingbirds painted on the walls. It’s located in a shopping mall, but once I’m in the seriously-playful designed restaurant, I kinda feel like I’m stepping in another world; a garden with flying hummingbirds and yummy food..! Haha..
My favorite “grazing” menu – ‘cos snacks are too human – is the “mushroom munchies”, which is breaded mushrooms with chili mayo dip. It’s savory, soft inside and crunchy outside.
The last time Mumun and I were there, we had “smoked salmon pasta” and marmite chicken with rice. The pasta dish was savory, just the way I like my food in general, and not too creamy. I just wish there were more than just 3 medium-sized slices of the smoked salmon ‘cos the smoked salmon taste was so moderate that it was flirting with my tongue, making me wanting more! And the “tasty marmite chicken” hinted only a bit of marmite, enough to cure Mumun’s nostalgic feeling of living down under.
Hummingbird Eatery is also known for the cakes, bread and waffles. I’ve had some bread-based dishes at the Bandung branch for breakfast. Though I’m not so big on bread, I enjoyed every bite of the baked bread, mushroom, beef and cream, but I forgot the name of the menu. As for the cakes, I’ve only tried a slice of tiramisu green tea cake. It was alright, I expected less cream and more of the green tea tiramisu and cake dough blend. But I did love the tiramisu and green tea combo!
Having all that said, Hummingbird Eatery is not all about yummy taste. It also gives presentation a serious thought, and I appreciate that. Even the menu list is colorfully written on little “chalkboards”. A bit less practical than the usual booklets, but definitely cuter 😉
So if you’re feeling like munching on bread, pasta, waffle, steak and potatoes, with a bit of dreamy outdoorsy feel on the ambiance yet still in the coolness of air conditioner, Hummingbird Eatery might be the place. I like to try new places to eat, but whenever I’m running some errands at the Kuningan City mall, I’m usually willingly caged at Hummingbird Eatery.Hummingbird Eatery Kuningan City shopping mall, Floor UG Jakarta Ph: 62 21 30056370 Website
