Another side of Semarang beside of its history is city of the Tionghoa (term for the Indonesian Chinese) ethnicity and a city full of delicious dishes, infamously the Lunpia (read Loonpia) Semarang or Semarang spring roll. And considering it was 2 weeks after the Chinese New Year, I thought I’d check out the ambience of Cap Gomeh in the highly dominated Tionghoa people. This is the second part of my trp to Semarang. I’ve also separated some ‘eats’ that was related to the Tionghoa community. Another side of Semarang besides the old city and it’s flood.

In brief

I declared to be back… so here I am! Semarang is the capital of Central Java. It’s relatively close to Jakarta but not a popular city to visit to those that do not know what is installed. People usually transit to get to Karimun Jawa, but that’s about it.

Born and raised in Lampung doesn’t make me an expert on it. In fact, I am far from being one. I spent the first 13 years of my life in Bandar Lampung, the capital city of Lampung province, at the southern tip of Sumatera Island. But on holidays, my parents used to take the whole family to Jakarta, Bandung, Bali, or Padang. Never to the other parts of Lampung. So, now is the time to explore this province, which houses, surprisingly, jaw-dropping natural sceneries!

Oktober & December 2009

By now, I thought I knew Indonesia well. I thought I could predict what I would see and experience. Yet this country again proves me wrong. Venturing to the east of Indonesia is a whole new ride. I pass by Kupang once in a while when I have to work on Wetar. I never really had time to actually ‘see’ the area due to work, but I do get glimpses of the Timor island. And it’s surprising! Although categorized as one of the most dry and poor province in Indonesia, it’s wealthy in exoticism. Hmm… there’s an idea for you… poverty is exoticism.  Such a satire statement hey?

Jogjakarta, March 2010

Again? Jogjakarta? Yes, again.

But this time I won't have anything much to tell you in words, just in pictures, which I took when I managed to roam about the city and province between works that flew me there. And I love the fact that I always discover some new things whenever I'm in this city, for example the batik sandals and the cozy hotel in which I stayed.
